MOTHER believes in local craftsmanship. 94% of our denim and over 90% of our overall manufacturing is made in Los Angeles utilizing fine imported materials. Each piece is a testament to our commitment to quality and responsibility, reflecting the vibrant spirit and creativity of L.A.

By keeping our production close to home, we ensure that every step of the process meets our high standards while supporting the local community. From the first stitch to the final product, our denim is truly made with love in L.A.

Our partners in this journey include our family of suppliers, such as mills that the company’s founders have worked with for over 20 years and the remaining denim wash houses in Los Angeles that we’ve continued to work with as a pledge to both quality and the preservation of local manufacturing.

MOTHER Maker

In June 2023, one of our longtime sewing contractors decided to retire. We took a look at the operation—and saw an opportunity to preserve jobs, knowledge, quality and expertise. So, we acquired the business and launched MOTHER Maker, our very own sewing operation. Today, MOTHER Maker is home to more than 50 employees and proudly produces about 20% of our total sewing capacity. It’s responsive, it’s focused and it’s all about quality.

DESIGN:

We design products that are made to be your favorites year after year.

Our purpose is to make great clothing—the ones you reach for every day, the ones you miss when they’re in the wash, the ones that make you feel like you’ve got this—because buying fewer things of higher quality is one of the most important ways we can care for the planet. By replacing your jeans less often, you’ll help reduce the use of resources and creation of pollution that results from making new things.

MATERIALS:

Product quality starts with durable materials.

We source from some of the best denim mills in the world. MOTHER works closely with these long-standing partners to hone and perfect materials over a one-to-three-year development process. The development process utilizes various fabric testing methods, including wear-testing prototypes.

PRODUCTION:

Producing locally creates an unprecedented level of production and quality control.

Being a few miles away from all production facilities means we can control quality and volume in real time. MOTHER employs several quality control professionals to be present in facilities. The result? Fewer defects, fewer unsold goods and less wasted material. Producing locally also means smarter inventory planning. We can avoid overproduction and keep our footprint smaller in the process.

We work with local L.A. small businesses to help sustain the city’s textile economy and heritage.

MOTHER is helping to preserve the artisanal craftsmanship of L.A. denim production—the kind of know-how that doesn’t live in textbooks. Jeans are a distinctly American invention that L.A. put its mark on through the skills of people who learned the trade over generations. But over the last decade, denim production has moved abroad, and there’s not much of it left here. The decline is stark, representing a nearly 80% reduction in overall apparel manufacturing employment in Los Angeles County since its 1996 peak [2].
