Kinney set out to create the Venice, Italy, of America, developing a beachside, palm tree-lined town complete with canals and a main boardwalk. Since then, it has evolved far beyond a quirky coastal getaway, becoming a microcosm of L.A.’s best art, fashion and food. But as a neighborhood, Venice Beach is also a bit of a paradox—for everything it is, it also kind of isn’t.

Is it a tourist destination or more of a locals-only spot? Is it grungy or upscale? Is it retro, with vinyl records and nostalgic surf vibes, or filled with new-age wellness haunts and tech startups? It’s all of the above—and more. The best part? Unlike most of L.A., it’s totally walkable. Ahead, check out our favorite local spots to eat, explore and shop in the one-of-a-kind Venice.

OK, let’s kick this off with everything you need to book in advance. Conveniently located on Abbot Kinney, Den Mother isn’t your average spa experience. Located in a charming, historic craftsman home, this wellness center specializes in treatments that seamlessly blend a variety of holistic traditions— ranging from Ayurvedic to Japanese to Nordic practices. Book a signature massage and facial rejuvenation acupuncture, and then stick around to bop back and forth between the cedar sauna and the individual cold plunge. And don’t skip the plant-based izakaya for a light bite post treatment.

For all things hair, Highbrow Hippie is our mecca (for color, see Kadi; for cuts, Liz is your girl). Run by Kadi Lee and Myka Harris, the Abbot Kinney atelier first opened in 2019 and sees the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Roberts. Unlike most luxury L.A. salons clustered in Beverly Hills and West Hollywood, Highbrow Hippie’s Venice location offers a laid-back, beachy vibe — complete with outdoor stations for al fresco highlights. But, while the energy is bohemian and easy going, the results are nothing short of meticulous.

After all the treatments, it's time for a walk along the Venice Canals. Built around urban canals, this historic neighborhood spans just a mile and a half and rarely attracts large crowds. From craftsman bungalows to modern glass boxes to Mediterranean revival-style homes, nearly every house boasts its own dock and rowboat. Take advantage of the charming arched pedestrian bridges to explore all six waterways. Why not pick your favorite house and fantasize about moving in?

If you’re looking for a bit more action, head over to the iconic Venice Boardwalk for spectacular people-watching and less-than-superb merchandise. While you're there, don’t miss the skatepark. Known as one of the most iconic skateboarding destinations in the world, the 16,000-square-foot park sits right on the beach. It’s a landmark, an attraction and a creative hub—all in one.

To end the day, head to The Venice West for great live music in a laid-back, intimate setting. Set in an unassuming brick building, you can expect to find some fun throwback acts (hi, Phantom Planet), as well as a mix of up-and-coming artists and, of course, great cover bands.

When it comes to shopping in Venice, consider Abbot Kinney a one-stop shop for everything from indie boutiques to mega brands. For the former, we love Burro—a leveled-up gift shop with something for everyone, including the little ones. For beauty junkies, Gen Z makeup brand AppleDoll’s pop-up is likely already on your radar—just keep in mind, it’s only open Thursday through Sunday.

If you’re exploring beyond Abbot Kinney, head to Gjusta Goods & Flower Shop for a perfect bouquet, a bottle of high-quality olive oil and the cheeseboard of your dreams. Next up, consider The General Store a masterclass in California-girl style. It’s a go-to for the perfect pair of vintage military cropped pants, hand-thrown ceramic pieces and a great pair of sunglasses that no one else has.

Last but certainly not least is Tortoise General Store—the Venice institution for beautifully crafted everyday items, almost all of which are made in Japan. Currently on our wishlist: the tenugui cloths in every colorway and a pair of SUBU slippers.

When it comes to great food, Venice is definitely having a moment.

And nothing screams Venice more than a cold-pressed, organic juice from Moon Juice. Owner Amanda Chantal Bacon’s longstanding shop offers everything from juices and tonics to nut milks and an adaptogenic dust that claims to boost libido.

Ready for some food? This might sound a bit absurd, but if you only had time for a few meals in Venice and ate exclusively within the Gjelina family of restaurants, you wouldn’t regret it. And that’s not because there aren’t plenty of other incredible spots (there are—we’ll get to them). Simply put, these places never disappoint. Start with coffee and the salmon roe bagel at Gjusta, enjoy a leisurely lunch at Gjelina (ask for a seat outside and order the mixed mushroom pizza with plenty of veggie sides) and then try your best to score a reservation at their latest addition, RVR.

Next up: since we’re seaside, keep the coastal vibes going with fresh seafood from either Dudley Market or Crudo e Nudo. For delicious Thai food with guaranteed good vibes, Night + Market is your answer—order the party wings and a glass of natural wine, and enjoy.

Felix, one of chef Evan Funke’s three L.A. restaurants (see: Mother Wolf in West Hollywood and Funke in Beverly Hills), is famous for perfect pasta dishes—there’s even a glass room dubbed the “pasta laboratory” where every noodle is made. And don’t miss the sfincione bread (think focaccia, but better); it’s worth the trip on its own. For a more casual Italian meal, Companion’s a welcome new addition in an airy, fun cafe setting.

Craving something totally unique? Panamanian chef José Carles’ restaurant Si! Mon hits the mark with exotic, Central American–inspired dishes like tuna carpaccio yuca tostadas and kampachi wrapped in banana leaf. Another new addition: Alisa Wine & Friends, a Greek spot perfect for an early summer dinner with girlfriends.

If you're wanting more of a restaurant-bar situation, where the food actually holds up, Coucou is the answer. Go for a martini, mussels and a side of fries.

Lastly, no proper L.A. neighborhood guide would be complete without a must-visit taco truck. Parked at the corner of 4th Avenue and Rose, La Isla Bonita serves an unforgettable ceviche tostada.
