HOW DAVID BOWIE’S ‘80S ERA INFLUENCED MOTHER’S NEW COLLECTION

From the first date of the worldwide Serious Moonlight Tour in 1983, David Bowie reintroduced himself to the world with a brand-new stage persona to accompany the vibrant and optimistic record Let’s Dance.

For his first tour in five years, Bowie returned to the stage cutting a razor-sharp figure that read closer now to classic showman than alien messiah, plastic soul merchant or Thin White Duke. Though he traded in the various personas and their attendant wardrobes and visuals in favor of a short blonde pompadour, crisp dress shirts, neat suspenders and pleated trousers, his star power never dimmed. With this chapter in full swing, David Bowie cast his alluring spell on the world all over again, selling out stadiums, lighting up dancefloors and inspiring millions around the globe — us included.

Channeling the spirit of the Serious Moonlight tour, MOTHER’s 8-piece capsule showcases a vibrant assortment of imagery from the tour posters and album art of the time. The Rowdy Tee is reimagined as a long sleeve, with illustrations from the Canadian leg of the tour pictured on front and back, while the Germany tour artwork is printed in bright orange on the Cut Wingman Tee. Elsewhere, album art from the 1984 record Tonight appears on the short sleeve Rowdy Tee and Drop Square Crewneck Sweatshirt.

Reflecting on the legacy of Bowie’s work, it’s almost hard to put into words how much he taught us - From the fearless, gender-fluid self-expression of Ziggy Stardust, to the boundless and explosive creativity of his post-glam era, the pioneering experimentation of his Berlin years, down to the transcendent spirituality of his final album in 2016.
