Enjoy the melodies of this masterfully optimized space while browsing their almost entirely new selection of records (the exception being their rare collection of colorful Japanese presses). Tucked away in Hollywood proper, but distanced from the chaos of tourists and traffic, this hidden gem is sure to be your new favorite spot for both classic and ultra-rare vinyl. If you work up an appetite while shopping, L.A. staples Tartine, Gigi’s and Sightglass Coffee are just a quick stroll away.

 

FOR THE COFFEE JUNKIE: COSMIC VINYL

In typical L.A. fashion, oat milk lattes are never far from reach. Cosmic Vinyl, a used record shop and vegan café, is perched on Sunset Boulevard in the heart of Echo Park, a neighborhood known for hosting young artists and trendsetters. Dripping with charm, the store has something for everyone: a vast array of records, unique hi-fi gear, accessories and clothing, all while flaunting some of the best coffee and tea drinks in the area. A consignment store for records, Cosmic Vinyl allows you to buy and sell your favorite music while enjoying fully vegan treats like breakfast burritos, craft sandwiches and fluffy pastries. Whether you’re hungry for new music or a quick bite, Cosmic Vinyl wants to satisfy. 

FOR THE FUN-LOVER: RECORD SAFARI

Shopping for records can be intimidating for the unseasoned purchaser, but Record Safari makes the experience fun, approachable and easygoing. The playful pink building sits in the heart of Los Feliz and contains a wide variety of music ranging from classic rock to Brazilian salsa. Equipped with free vintage arcade games and a fully stocked beverage fridge, the shop instantly makes you feel welcome upon arrival. Owner Alex Rodriguez, who has curated records for the Coachella on-site store, describes it as a place where anyone can “come hang out and have a good time.” Even better, dogs are always encouraged, and if your furry friend wants to stretch his legs after you indulge in your musical whimsies, feel free to stop by the grassy dog park directly next door. 

 

FOR THE COLLECTOR: ROCKAWAY RECORDS

Welcome to the museum of musical relics, Rockaway Records. Aside from its expansive medley of classic and underground vinyl, this L.A. staple is known for carrying some of the most unique and exclusive music paraphernalia on the market. The shop’s collectibles range from bargain bin trinkets to big-ticket items, such as a $10,000 original LP set of the Beatles White Album. The Silver Lake store is brimming with character, featuring vintage posters, funky t-shirts and band art that channels the grittiness of the 90s. Born in 1992, this musical mecca is one of the longest-surviving record stores in L.A. and continues to establish itself as a home for the city’s most enthusiastic music lovers.

Located in the historic core of downtown Los Angeles, The Last Bookstore is a fantastic funhouse of arts and literature. As one of the city’s most magical and eccentric gems, this information hub holds so much more than your favorite B-Side Stones album. Brimming with new and used books, graphic novels and tens of thousands of vinyl records, this world-renowned landmark lets the imagination run wild. Walk about the two-story labyrinth to find psychedelic passageways built of hardcover novels, cozy reading nooks with jewel-toned leather couches, and towering stone columns that support the building’s 24-foot-tall ceiling. Sitting within the Spring Arts Tower, a historic building erected in 1915, The Last Bookstore is a maze of the mind and is sure to spark inspiration in every visitor.
