Creativity has always been woven into the fabric of MOTHER. Long after the denim’s designed, the emails are sent and the team goes home, it spills into paint, clay, leather and the occasional concrete pasta sculpture. So, we asked some of our brilliantly creative, multi-hyphenate employees to pull back the curtain on the projects keeping their hands busy and imaginations wandering after hours — from the pieces they’re most proud of to the songs filling their studios while they work. They’ve already been stars in our universe — we’re just sharing a little of their light with the rest of the world.

Title: Sr. Art Director

Years at MOTHER: 11

Artistic medium: Painting

You knew you were an artist when: I was 5 years old.

What you’re currently working on: A cerulean blue atmospheric painting for a client.

The piece you’re most proud of: A bright pink print that hangs in my daughter’s room.

The song on repeat in the studio: ABBA

How you get creative at MOTHER: It’s easy to feel inspired when you’re surrounded by incredible artists in such a cool environment. MOTHER has always been a place that thrives on collaboration and is open to anyone’s wild ideas. No idea is too small…every odd thought has the potential to spark something great.

Three artists that inspire you: Ellsworth Kelly, Jenny Saville, Richard Serra, Alec Egan

Where we can find + support your art: @aeustudio

Title: Site Merchandising Manager

Years at MOTHER: 4 ½ years

Artistic medium: DIY anything! Currently that includes leather, concrete, and pewter.

You knew you were an artist when: What a cliché, but ever since I could remember anything at all? My mom would agree.

What you’re currently working on: I’ve been making a lot of random, everyday things out of leather. That and ceramics!

The piece you’re most proud of: I made some jumbo concrete pasta a while ago because I thought it’d be funny. That led to a large 260-piece pasta commission for an Italian restaurant out near Boston where they spelled out their name in said pasta, which I thought was really funny. I only make things that make me laugh, so I guess that was a full circle moment?

The song on repeat in the studio: “Ready For The Floor” by Hot Chip, with no exaggeration, since 2008.

How you get creative at MOTHER: Problem solving! Creativity comes in all forms and isn’t just limited to visual output.

Three artists that inspire you: David Hockney, David Byrne & Nathalie Du Pasquier

Where we can find + support your art: @shippe_la

You knew you were an artist when: I knew I was an artist when I was asked to draw the cover of the yearbook for our elementary class! (Lol)

What you’re currently working on: I'm currently experimenting with how to combine ceramics and seashells…we’ll see!

The piece you’re most proud of: A zine I made called “All Bark, All Bite” about my dog, Cherry!

The song on repeat in the studio: “You Turn Me On, I’m a Radio” by Joni Mitchell

How you get creative at MOTHER: A great team and good snacks.

Three artists that inspire you: Sister Corita Kent, Seymour Chwast and Frida Kahlo

Title: Retail Coordinator UK

Years at MOTHER: 6 years

Artistic medium: Mixed media / painting, drawing, sculpture, garments

You knew you were an artist when: I think I knew I was an artist from a very young age. Written or spoken words never felt like my strongest way of expressing myself. Over the years, I naturally gravitated toward different creative mediums to express my inner voice. It probably started as early as five years old, when I was drawing on walls with anything I could find. Later, around the age of thirteen, that creativity evolved into making outfits for myself. Then, in my twenties, I returned to painting, which became my main form of expression.

What you’re currently working on: Searching for new mediums to express myself.

The piece you’re most proud of: The piece I’m most proud of is the first artwork I shared — a three-headed sketch I created one morning before work in 2013. It came from a moment when I couldn’t put my emotions into words and was getting overwhelmed, but then I started to draw. I didn't know what or why, but I needed to get it out. Once it was done, I felt a huge relief. I’ve never actually told the story behind that drawing out loud. It’s far from the most expensive or valuable or even artistically correct piece of art I have made, but it shares a moment of realization about the power and importance of creating.

The song on repeat in the studio: An‘80s/'90s playlist on shuffle or, if I had to choose one, “Rebel Yell” by Billy Idol.

How you get creative at MOTHER: For me, creativity is closely linked to problem-solving, and it’s one of the aspects of my work that I enjoy the most. While many people see problem-solving as a purely analytical task, I view it as a creative process. It involves both working with something physical, such as painting, and using your mind to analyze, imagine, and explore different approaches in order to find the best solution for each situation. That balance between practical work and creative thinking is what I find most rewarding in my role.

Three artists that inspire you: Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Marina Abramovič
